Workshop: Google NewsLab
EKU Multimedia News students learned from Google News Lab guru Mike Reilley how to create with the new tools available to tell interactive stories.
More than 80 students participated in the day-long workshop on EKU’s campus Friday, Nov. 3.
“Important things people should realize — Google is much more than a search engine,” tweeted senior Noena Zerna, EKU chapter president for the Society of Professional Journalists, which co-sponsored the event.
Reilley introduced students to updates in Google Earth Pro and Fusion Tables, along with data scraping using Google Sheets and Tabula. Students learned how to spot everything from trends in searches for local sub shops to using time lapse satellite images to show Kentucky’s environmental changes.
The event was co-sponsored by SPJ, Google, and the EKU Department of Communication.
