kejc09

Eastern Kentucky University’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, in conjunction with the Center for Appalachian Studies and the Department of Communication, is hosting a Kentucky Environmental Journalism Conference Friday, Nov. 13.

Professional and student journalists, environmental activists, researchers, industry representatives and others interested in media coverage of environmental issues are invited to the conference, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Powell Student Center.

Tom Eblen, columnist and former managing editor for the Lexington Herald-Leader, will give the keynote address. Eblen was a reporter and editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Associated Press and during the 1980s covered the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The conference will feature panel sessions on covering coal, agriculture as an environmental issue, water issues in Kentucky, resources available through the Environmental Research Institute at Eastern and tips from reporters on the environmental beat.

Registration is $15 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and conference handouts. Student registration is $10.  Pre-registration is required. For more information or to pre-register, contact Deborah Givens at 859-622-6564 or e-mail deborah.givens@eku.edu.
